Internationally Trained Family Physicians


Pathways

In Saskatchewan there are three pathways for internationally trained Family Physicians to qualify for a licence. The pathway is generally determined by the country in which you completed your postgraduate/internship training. The three pathways are:

Pathway 1: Recognition of foreign credentials by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)

The Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) without examination may be granted to physicians who graduated from an accredited postgraduate training program in family medicine in a CFPC recognized jurisdictions. Recognized jurisdictions include Australia, Ireland, United Kingdom and United States of America.

To pursue this option:

Pathway 2: Qualify, Be Selected and Successfully Complete the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment (SIPPA)

SIPPA is a Practice Ready Assessment program that ensures that international physicians possess the appropriate clinical skills and knowledge to provide quality patient care in Canada. This option may be available to those with training outside of the CFPC recognized jurisdictions.

To pursue this option:

Pathway 3: Complete a residency program in Canada

In order to complete a residency in Canada, you must match to a residency program through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). CaRMS is a national, independent, not-for-profit, fee-for-service organization that provides a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service for medical training throughout Canada. Each university and program will have specific requirements that an applicant must meet before qualifying for the match.
