Founded in 1926 as the School of Medical Sciences, the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine provides a full range of academic programming including undergraduate and post-graduate medical training, physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences, and undergraduate and graduate programs in the Biomedical Sciences. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) launched December 4th 2017, transitioning 12 former Regional Health Authorities to a single provincial health authority. As the single largest organization in the Province, the SHA is driven by the commitment to improve frontline patient care for Saskatchewan people, and are working together to better coordinate health services across the province to ensure patients receive high quality, timely health care, wherever they live in Saskatchewan.
The Provincial Head, Department of Emergency Medicine will provide the leadership necessary to ensure the seamless integration of the academic and clinical activities of the department. The Provincial Head reports directly to the Dean of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan and the Chief Medical Officer, Saskatchewan Health Authority. Within respect to academic affairs, the Provincial Head reports directly to the appropriate Vice-Deans on education, research and faculty engagement. The Provincial Head is accountable for the leadership of the department and for contributing to the leadership of the College of Medicine and Saskatchewan Health Authority. Accountabilities include the creation, alignment, and implementation of the Department of Emergency Medicine’s teaching, research, and clinical plans and ensuring the academic quality of the department.
The Provincial Head’s major responsibilities include:
• Supporting the goals and priorities of the Provincial Health Authority.
• Full participation in the planning process for the College of Medicine and the Provincial Health Authority.
• Oversight of the academic work of the department; recruiting, developing, and retaining high-quality clinicians, faculty, and staff.
• Prudent and responsible management of financial resources and the use of those resources to their best advantage for the purpose for which they were intended; and provision of a healthy and positive work and learning environment.
The College of Medicine is seeking an experienced and visionary leader who has an established track record of administrative leadership experience and strong interpersonal skills. The Provincial Head, Department of Emergency Medicine will be an MD with formal certification in FRCPC, CFPC-EM, or equivalent and have the ability to achieve professional certification in Saskatchewan. The Provincial Department Head’s ability to be an ambassador for the Saskatchewan community, to open minds and to raise performance levels will have long-lasting effects on the University of Saskatchewan’s national and international reputation.
